From tiny acorns............

No white nor red was ever seen
So am'rous as this lovely green.
Fond lovers, cruel as their flame,
Cut in these trees their mistress' name.
Little, alas, they know or heed
How far these beauties hers exceed!
Fair trees! where s'e'er your barks I wound,
No name shall but your own be found.
- Andrew Marvell, 1621-1678, The Garden

(Now that takes me back to A Level English classes!)

We finally agreed on a tree for our front garden - I did so want something with blossom on but after it was explained to me that after the first gust of wind the blossom would be lying on the ground like confetti we decided on a tree with interesting foliage.

We chose an acer brilliantissimum - it is only a small one (as larger specimens cost a whole heap more) and there is no fun in gardening if you don't watch things grow. Unfortunately just under the grass where we decided the tree would go was a stone of boulder proportions!!! It took poor Andy ages to dig it up. We have been very lucky with our garden as the builders don't seem to have dumped all their rubbish under the topsoil. You can see how big it actually was with Callum next to it for comparison.

Already the leaves have started to unfurl and it is looking more "tree like!"
